Wang Announces Her Departure on X

Hsiao-Wei Wang steps down from the Ethereum Foundation. On X Thursday morning, Hsiao-Wei Wang revealed that she’s resigned from her position as Co-Executive Director after an extended hiatus. Wang stated that “some period of self-reflection” has led to the decision to resign.

“ I’ve come to feel that this is the right moment for me to step back. ” – Hsiao-Wei Wang, EF Co-Executive Director, Jun 18th, 2026.

There is no indication of friction within the team, and her statement focuses instead on personal reflection and the long-term outlook of the Ethereum network. “Ethereum has always been bigger than any one role, any one organization, or any one moment,” she wrote.

Her exit takes effect immediately. The Foundation has not announced a direct replacement for her role. Bastian Aue continues to guide the organization in the interim.

A Pattern of Exits at the Ethereum Foundation

Wang’s departure is not an isolated event. It follows a broader wave of senior exits at the nonprofit. At least nine figures have left the EF in the past five months alone.

The list below shows who has departed the Ethereum Foundation in 2026:

The EF’s Protocol Cluster has now lost contributors across every layer it covers. That team handles Ethereum’s core protocol research. These back-to-back exits have raised community concerns about the Foundation’s direction.

Why This Wave Matters

The Foundation faces mounting competition from rival blockchains. At the same time, it is navigating a leadership transition without both of its co-executive directors. That combination puts pressure on Bastian Aue and the remaining leadership team.

Community scrutiny around the EF’s governance strategy has grown louder. Since its funding announcement, analysts and developers have spoken out against the Foundation’s proposed focus. The recent resignation from Hsiao-Wei Wang of the Ethereum Foundation seems to only serve as another point of input to the current conversation.

Who Is Hsiao-Wei Wang?

Wang joined the Ethereum Foundation in mid-2017 as an L1 researcher. She has nearly nine years of contributions to the network. Her technical work spans some of Ethereum’s most important milestones.

Wang’s Key Contributions to Ethereum

  • Contributed to the design and specification of the Beacon Chain
  • Played a central role in the Merge, Ethereum’s shift from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake
  • Worked on the Shapella upgrade, which enabled staking withdrawals
  • Contributed to the Dencun upgrade, which reduced layer-2 transaction costs

Wang’s background sits at the intersection of distributed systems and cryptography. Her work helped ensure Ethereum’s upgrades were both theoretically sound and practically resilient. She remained active in research until her co-executive director appointment in March 2025.

Wang and Stańczak’s Leadership Record

Wang and Tomasz Stańczak were appointed co-executive directors in March 2025. They replaced Aya Miyaguchi, who faced criticism from investors over Ethereum’s price performance. Critics also pushed for a more aggressive approach to Ethereum’s development.

During their joint tenure, the EF made several structural changes. The Foundation laid off 19 employees and shifted focus back to scaling Ethereum’s base layer. It also launched new initiatives covering privacy, quantum resistance, and artificial intelligence.

What Comes Next for the Ethereum Foundation

Bastian Aue has stepped into a larger role following both co-executive director exits. He served as a board member before taking on interim leadership duties during Wang’s sabbatical. The Ethereum Foundation Hsiao-Wei Wang resigns from development, and now leaves Aue as the primary face of EF leadership.

Aue’s Role and the Road Ahead

Aue described his prior EF work as focused on helping management make well-informed decisions. He also worked across teams to support organizational operations. That behind-the-scenes experience now becomes front and center for the Foundation.

The EF’s roadmap still includes several major proposals. These cover Ethereum’s ongoing protocol development and a framework for DeFi coordination. Delivering on those plans without two of its most senior leaders will test the organization’s capacity.

The Ethereum Foundation must now rebuild confidence while keeping development on track. How quickly it stabilizes its leadership structure will shape Ethereum’s trajectory in the months ahead.
